| Assessing which entry into the house is safest for your loved one. | | Optimal ground surface : Level, smooth ground surface. Check for cracking cement, uneven ground, and potholes.
Steps : Choose the entry with the least amount of steps. If there are steps, make sure there is at least one sturdy railing for assistance. Check to see if the step depth is adequate to safely use a walker, if needed. Steps should not exceed 6" in heighth, if possible. Make sure steps have a non-slip surface.
Ramps : If there is a need for a ramp, is there an entry into the house that can accomodate it? The legal elevation is one foot of ramp for each inch of height you need to reach the door. Lighting : Consider installing a motion detection light near the entry that your loved one uses. This will provide proper lighting for your loved one, should they arrive home after dark. It will also allow them to see approaching visitors that may come to the door after dark. |
