Helping Seniors Prepare For Disasters
Post Date: 11/15/2003

Nobody likes to think about disaster, and you can't predict when it is going to occur.
This makes having a plan especially important for those who have special needs.
AgingLove.com wants to point out that a disaster doesn't always have to be a hurricane, tornado, flood or terrorist attack.
For some people, a summer thunderstorm can signal big trouble.

For example: Power Outages
Most of us have experienced a power outage at some point in time. But what if you, or an aging loved one, depends on electricity for oxygen. An oxygen concentrator is a machine that uses electricity to filter room air into a higher concentration of oxygen. Many people with lung diseases or heart conditions depend on the electricity that runs the machine that makes oxygen.
What do you do?
  • Always make sure you have enough portable oxygen tanks to get you through the outage. This is for short term outages only.

  • Check with the Home Medical Equipment Store that supplies your oxygen about their procedure and plans for disasters such as power outages.
  • Let your electric company know that someone in your house depends on electricity for oxygen or other medical equipment
